Welcome to Curie College "Nulli Secundus" As Head of Curie College, I am very proud to welcome you to our small part of the school website. As you explore the pages of this website I hope you will gain an insight into the culture and ethos of our College The College is named after the scientist Marie Curie who was undoubtedly one of the world's most remarkable women. Marie Curie is remembered for her huge contribution to the fight against cancer and improving the quality of human life. She was born Maria Sklodowska on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, the youngest of five children of poor schoolteachers. After her mother died and her father could no longer support her she become a governess; reading and studying in her own time to quench her thirst for knowledge; a passion she never lost. To become a teacher was never a possibility because money, or rather lack of it, prevented her from gaining formal higher education. However, when her sister offered her lodgings in Paris with a view to going to university, she grasped the opportunity and moved to France in 1891. She immediately entered Sorbonne University in Paris where she read physics and mathematics. Her insatiable appetite for learning meant she had naturally discovered her love of the subjects. It was in Paris, in 1894, that she met Pierre Curie, a scientist working in the city, who she married a year later. It was also around this time that she adopted the French spelling of her name - Marie. As a College we pride ourselves as a community committed to excellence and achievement. We encourage all our students to participate in our community knowing that this will enrich their education and allow them to become successful students. Thank you for visiting and we would value your feedback on the site.
