Department of Sanitation New York

You may be wondering why a school website has a dedicated link to the sanitation department of New York?

I must admit I did think twice about making such a big deal about a department in a different continent.

So what is it all about?  Well you may not be aware but the Sanitation department of New York are regarded

with awe and respect by the people of New York.  They are known as New York's strongest because of the

huge amount of rubbish they move every day.  New Yorkers are so proud of them that they have named a

street in their honour, you can even buy DSNY merchandice!  Compare this with our society where some people

look down on people who clean our environment, have you ever seen anyone walking around Caterbury with a

KCC Refuse Collector T-Shirt?  I did an assembly on the DSNY to highlight how people in a different culture treat people

who do this essential job.  I want students to be proud of their environment and consider ways in which they can

make it better but also protect what they have.  The DSNY were kind enough to allow me to link to them,

although I think they thought I was slightly mad.  Visit their website by clicking on the banner above or play the

game (available on our front page) to learn more about what they do.  Many thanks to them and in particular

Ana Lafe, the Director of Special Projects for the Department of Sanitation NY.
