Chaucer Technology School has been offering the Bronze award for several years and is hoping to start the Silver level this year.

What do you need to do?

A quick guide to Silver Award.
VolunteeringAverage one hour per week for SIX months
SkillAverage one hour per week for THREE months Either skill or sport must be undertaken for a further THREE months.
Physical recreationAverage one hour per week for THREE months
 Expedition

Train, plan for and complete a THREE day,  TWO night expedition in an unfamiliar area.

Complete (and pass!) one official practice camp first.

Complete a presentation about your experiences.

Must complete additional training and practice appropriate to the level of experience within the group and the terrain being traversed.

Participants can DIRECTLY enter for the Silver Award without having completed the Bronze Award - HOWEVER an additional SIX months must be added to the length of EITHER the volunteering OR the longer obe of the sport / skill section.

All participants must 15 years old by the time that they complete a section or before going on expeditions.

Participants may continue an activity that they commenced for their Bronze Award or pick a brand new opportunity.  It is a good idea to think about how easy it is to get to the activity location as the Silver sections must be completed over a longer period.  You may also wish to think about what type of activities will make a good CV for the courses or careers you may be considering.

All participants should print the appropriate section syllabus from the D of E website and show it to their instructor BEFORE they start an activity.  At Silver award the syllabus needs to be followed more closely than at Bronze so that the aims of the award are met.

It is therefore important to discuss your chosen section with the instructor at a BRIEFING and decide on your GOALS.  Then discuss your proposal with you unit leader.  If you follow these simple steps it will save you doing lots of hard work only to find that the section cannot be signed as completed due to some technicality.

At Silver level, DofE would prefer that, if your activity instructor/supervisor is a parent, then someone else assesses whether your goals have been met.  If in doubt ASK!

Don't forget to use the section log sheets (from your record book or the download section of this web page) to keep arecord of what you do each week.  You could take some photographs (if appropriate) and we can add them to this web site, so future participants can see what opportunities are available.

Remember that the award is not a race, so you do not have to do all the sections simultaneously.  It would be good to have completed enough work in time, so that school can refer to the Award for U.C.A.S. or job applications, or so that you could use a DofE instructor directly as one of your job referees.  However, it is your free time that we are utilising so remember to have some relaxation!

You could use the local Open Award Centre at Canterbury sports centre after you leave school, as you have until 24 to complete the Award.  It would be a good social contact point and employers may even be persuaded to give you some time off to complete such as well recognised scheme.
